Informed individuals and open discussion
As more people are becoming aware of privacy versus security, fear and annoyance is mounting. We have witnessed more threats to privacy than ever before. We have also manifested so many forms of violence across the world. In the near future, more people are going to be talking possible attacks and cyber-war, but it is questionable whether there will be an established institution and follow-up steps to fight for security.
Lawmakers in the United States have raised concerns United States being vulnerable to a cyber attack, especially with suspicious activities from Russia and China. Michael Rogers, head of U.S. Cyber, urged members of the Senate Armed Services Committee to accelerate debate on how to balance security and privacy in the digital realm. Mounting tension and speculations about Russia’s activities and terrorists’ ability to throw cyber-attack has been putting a lot of pressure on the government.
I think that in the near future, specialists and experts’ voice and leadership will become more important. At least in the United States, the issue of privacy versus security has been very widespread for a long time. Civil societies, individuals, and any organized forces can exert pressure on the government to be protected of their civil rights to privacy. However, the government can always respond that people do not know what is best for them and that security takes a priority. I think this is when technological experts can fill in the professional gap to inform citizens and to work best to achieve most of privacy and seucurity. In the case of Russia, it would have to be more about getting people to think about contentious issues at stake first. In order to keep mutual respect with government and the people, it is important to keep the civil society.
In closing, I think there can be some fascinating truths to be revealed about the field. There needs to be more of a free environment for open discussion and sharing of ideas, which build the basis for healthy civil society and well-functioning of the government to achieve both security and privacy.
