Various US responses to European Security versus Privacy

With the recent terrorist attack in Brussels, I have decided to switch the topic to reveal various US opinions on security versus privacy issue in Europe. Of course, it is hard to define one identifying opinion, as it is contentious issue.

Briefly examining the history of Europe’s law, French lawmakers approved a broad surveillance law after the militants inspired by al-Qaeda stormed a satirical magazine in Paris. Responding to Paris attack last year, government has propped up the policy. This allowed hidden cameras and phone taps without a warrant. Civic liberty advocates have criticized such measures, claiming that they won’t in any ways properly bolster security. Despite the critic, United Kingdom has shown effort to update the surveillance rules.

Michael V Hayden, former director of National security Agency said that the European nations have relied on the United States for sharing information and resources for surveillance. Ever since the Snowden’s revelation, the United States has been rather careful, especially in the public, to provide resources for surveillance. However, Europe is lacking a lot of resources that wouldn’t be able to sustain its liberal surveillance and monitoring policy. Civil societies where the leadership is based in US have been condemning European actions because of blatant invasion to privacy. Further, US government stance is often comprehended in a way that allows open interpretations, fearing worldwide condemnation.

In closing, it is hard to draw one definite US opinion on the issue of privacy versus security in context to the most recent terrorist attack in Brussels. US has been careful in making any bold statements, but the fight for security must continue.
